JERSEY CITY MAN ARRESTED FOR FEBRUARY MURDER OF HIS BROTHER
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information:
On Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at approximately 10 a.m. Gangaram Maharaj, wanted for the February 27, 2016 murder of his brother, Rajendra Maharaj, surrendered to Homicide detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit on an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
On October 5, 2016, an arrest warrant was issued for Gangaram Maharaj, age 58, of Jersey City charging him with Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3a(1)(2), a first degree crime.
Maharaj’s bail was set at $500,000 cash or bond.
On Feb. 27, 2016, at approximately 10:30 a.m. Jersey City Medical Center received a 911 call requesting assistance at 72 Van Reipen Ave. in Jersey City. An EMS Unit was dispatched and upon arrival, EMS personnel discovered the lifeless body of Rajendra Maharaj, age 62, in the 3rd floor residence. A post mortem examination of the victim’s body conducted on Feb. 28, 2016, determined that the cause of death was suffocation and the manner of death was homicide.
Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for leading the investigation resulting in the arrest of Maharaj.
The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6).
